sextortion

Blackmail where someone threatens to share a nude or sexual image of a young person unless they pay money or send more images. Sometimes the image is faked.

For parents and educators

Teen boys aged 14 to 17 are the most common targets of the money-driven version, often by someone posing as a girl their age. Victims are not to blame and are not breaking the law. Tell your child ahead of time that if this ever happens, you will help, not punish. The advice from Cybertip.ca and NCMEC: do not pay, do not send more, stop replying, keep the messages, and report.

If you’re worried

Report right away at Cybertip.ca. NeedHelpNow.ca helps with getting images removed. Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 or text 686868. If your child is in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.

Where it came from
