unalive

A stand-in word for kill, die or suicide. It started as a way to talk about death on apps that hide posts using those words, and is now everyday speech for many kids.

That show unalived my favourite character in the first episode.

For parents and educators

Most of the time it is a joke or a plain substitute word, used about video games, TV plots or history class. It is worth a calm check-in if your child uses it about themselves, especially alongside withdrawal, giving things away or saying they feel like a burden. You can ask directly: "When you say that, do you ever mean it about yourself?" Asking does not plant the idea.

If you’re worried

Call or text 988 (Suicide Crisis Helpline) any time. Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 or text 686868. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
