grippy sock vacation

A darkly joking way to describe a stay in a psychiatric hospital, named after the non-slip socks patients wear.

If I fail this exam I'm going on a grippy sock vacation.

For parents and educators

Usually a joke about stress, and sometimes a way kids talk openly about their own or a friend's hospital stay. Some clinicians worry the humour can make hospitalization sound trivial or glamorous. If your child uses it a lot, it can be a gentle opening: "Do you know anyone who has had to go to the hospital for their mental health?"

Where it came from

Spread on TikTok in the early 2020s as dark humour about mental health care.
