incel

Short for "involuntary celibate," men who blame women and society for their lack of romantic success. "Blackpill" is the incel belief that nothing can change a man's fate, which can turn to hopelessness.

For parents and educators

Kids sometimes use "incel" as a playground insult. Pay attention if your child talks about themselves this way, says there is no point trying, or expresses anger at women as a group. Researchers studying these forums found frequent encouragement toward self-harm, so hopelessness here deserves a caring check-in.

If you’re worried

If your child sounds hopeless, call or text 988 any time. Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 or text 686868. If you hear threats toward others, contact the school and police; in an emergency, call 911.

Where it came from

Online forums from the 2000s onward; the culture has been linked to misogynist violence.
