alpha
A ranking of men: alphas are dominant and desired, betas are weak or overlooked. "Beta" is used as an insult.
For parents and educators
Kids often use it jokingly. The worry is when it frames relationships as a contest and girls as prizes. A good question: "Who decides who is an alpha? What does that make everyone else?"
Where it came from
Pop-psychology idea borrowed from outdated wolf research and central to manosphere content.
Also heard as
beta, alpha male
