Character.AI under-18 chat ban

After lawsuits from families, Character.AI says it will end open-ended AI chats for under-18 users, a sign that companion-style chatbots can become an emotional risk for some teens, though most use is not harmful.

Should I worry?

The concern is not chatting with an AI as such, but open-ended chats where a bot plays a friend or partner and keeps the conversation going. Experts say these can encourage a teen to lean on it emotionally, pull away from real people, or share very personal struggles with something that can't truly help. Signs to notice: a lot of late-night chatting, secrecy about the app, distress when it's unavailable, or talking about a character as if it were a real friend or partner. Stay curious rather than punishing, ask what the bot gives them that other relationships don't, and check which AI apps are on their devices and what age settings they have. Other apps still offer similar chatbots, so this change on one platform doesn't remove the issue.

How to join in

Character.AI lets people chat with AI characters, from invented personalities to versions of fictional favourites. Teens like it because it's always available, never judges, and lets them play with stories and ideas. A good way in is to ask them to show you a character they like and what they do with it. Creative uses, like writing or role-play stories, are very different from using a bot as a main confidant, so listen for which one it is.

Try saying

“I read that some AI chat apps are changing their rules for teens, and it got me curious. Have you ever chatted with one? I'm not upset, I'd just like to know what you like about it, and I'm always here if something is on your mind that you'd rather talk through with a person.”

If you’re worried

If your teen seems very low, withdrawn, or talks about hurting themselves, take it seriously and talk with them directly. Call or text 988 any time, or call 911 if they are in immediate danger. Kids Help Phone is also available at 1-800-668-6868 or by texting 686868.
