AI companions

Chatbot apps that act as a friend or romantic partner are growing, and the main concern for teens is emotional dependence and pulling away from real-life relationships, not the technology itself.

Should I worry?

These apps are built to be warm, agreeable and always available, which can make a lonely or struggling teen feel understood and keep coming back. The risks are emotional dependence, pulling away from friends and family, romantic or sexual role-play, and sharing very personal details with a company. Watch for a teen who seems more withdrawn, gets upset or secretive when the app is out of reach, or talks about the chatbot as a person who needs them. Start with curiosity rather than a ban: ask to see it, look together at the age settings and privacy options, and make sure there are real people they can turn to. A sudden ban can leave a teen who relies on it feeling even more alone.

How to join in

AI companions are chatbots you can customize with a name, a look and a personality, then talk to like a friend. Teens like them because they never judge, always reply and are easy to confide in, especially on a rough day or when friendships feel complicated. A good way in is to ask what they find fun or useful about chatting with an AI, and to try it together. Talk about the fact that it is a program designed to keep you engaged, not a person who knows you.

Try saying

“I've been reading about apps where you chat with an AI like a friend, and I'm curious what you think of them. If you ever talk to one, I'm not mad, I'd just like to hear what it's like. And if something heavy is on your mind, I'd love to be someone you can talk to too.”

If you’re worried

If your teen seems isolated, very distressed or dependent on a chatbot, talk to them calmly and consider involving their doctor, a school counsellor or another trusted professional. Kids Help Phone is free and confidential at 1-800-668-6868 or by texting 686868. If they mention self-harm or suicide, call or text 988, and call 911 in an emergency. If a chatbot has been sexual with your teen or someone is pressuring them online for images, report it at Cybertip.ca.
