AI-generated child abuse imagery

A UK child-protection watchdog reports record levels of realistic AI-made child sexual abuse images and videos in 2025, with video rising sharply; it is mainly an adult-driven crime, but it matters for parents because fake images can use real children's likenesses and making or sharing them is illegal.

Should I worry?

The Internet Watch Foundation says it found thousands of realistic AI-made child abuse images and videos in 2025, and that most of the videos were in the most serious category. The group stresses that this is not a victimless crime: the material can build on real abuse images and real children's likenesses. Most of this is produced and traded by adults, and the report does not describe it as a teen trend. Still, a photo of your child posted online could be misused, and teens may come across fake or sexual images of peers. Warning signs include a child who is upset about a rumour of a fake image of them, who is being pressured or threatened over pictures, or who suddenly withdraws from their phone or friends. If it happens, stay calm, keep screenshots without forwarding the content, and report it. Remind your teen that making, keeping or sharing sexual images of anyone under 18, even fake ones, can be a crime.

How to join in

This is not a fun trend, so there is no playful way in, but it is a good reason to talk about AI and images. Many teens already know that AI can fake photos and voices, and some have seen fake images of classmates or celebrities. Ask what they have seen and how they would tell if a picture was fake. It is a chance to agree on a simple family rule: we do not forward or keep sexual images of anyone, real or fake, and we tell each other if something shows up.

Try saying

“I read that AI can now make fake pictures that look real, including terrible ones of kids. If you ever see something like that, or someone makes a fake image of you or a friend, you will never be in trouble with me for telling me. I would just want us to deal with it together.”
