frette

Québec pronunciation of 'froid' (cold), often meaning really cold. Kids also use it for a cold, awkward vibe between people. 'Net frette sec' means suddenly, flat out.

Il fait frette à matin. Pis l'ambiance dans le groupe était frette aussi. (It's freezing this morning. And the vibe in the group was cold too.)

For parents and educators

Harmless. If it's about a friend group being 'frette', it can be worth asking if there's a falling-out.

Where it came from

An old regional form of 'froid' kept alive in Québec.

Also heard as

c'est frette, net frette sec
