A note for families: Tanmaxxing
What it is
Tanmaxxing is a trend where teens deliberately tan as intensely as possible, often without sunscreen, and post the results online; dermatologists warn it raises skin cancer risk, but it is a risk of appearance pressure rather than something designed to hurt.
How much it matters
Real but nuanced. Usually fine; it depends on the kid and how they use it.
Should you worry?
The concern is real but gradual: repeated sun exposure without protection raises the long-term risk of skin cancer, and melanoma rates in Canada have been climbing for decades. Dermatologists say teens are now treating a deep tan as a goal after years of progress on sun safety. Signs to notice: your teen skipping sunscreen on purpose, asking to stay home to be in the sun, comparing tans online, or talking about using tanning beds. Keep it calm. Make sunscreen, shade and hats easy and normal, and don't make it a fight over looks. If your teen is set on a tan, talk about alternatives like sunless products.
What to say
“I've been seeing a lot about people trying to get really tanned this summer. What are you seeing online about it? I like how you look with or without a tan, and I just want your skin to stay healthy, so can we figure out together what sun protection you'd actually be okay wearing?”
If you’re worried
If you notice a mole or spot on your teen's skin that changes in shape, colour or size, or that bleeds or won't heal, see your family doctor or a dermatologist. A pharmacist can also advise on sunburn care and sun protection. Kids Help Phone (1-800-668-6868, or text 686868) is available if your teen is struggling with how they feel about their appearance.
