6-7 ("six-seven")

"6-7" is a nonsense chant that tweens shout as an in-group joke, tied to a rap song and basketball clips, and Dictionary.com named it its 2025 word of the year; it's harmless.

Should I worry?

There is nothing to protect your child from here. "6-7" has no fixed meaning, no hidden message and no known link to risky behaviour. At most it can wear thin in class, so if a teacher asks for a break from it, that's a normal school-rules conversation, not a safety one.

How to join in

Kids shout "6-7" (sometimes with a hands-bobbing gesture) because it's nonsense and everyone their age gets the joke while adults don't. It grew out of a rap song and basketball clips, and some say it means "so-so" or "maybe this, maybe that", but mostly it means whatever the moment needs. Easy way in: ask your kid to explain it, then let them enjoy watching you fail to get it.

Try saying

“I keep hearing "6-7" and I have no clue what it means. Can you explain it to me? I promise I'll be bad at it.”
