Discord face scan for everyone

A widely shared claim that every Discord user must scan their face or upload an ID is false: Discord says most people will never be asked, and only some age-restricted features involve a check.

Should I worry?

No need to panic: your teen will not be forced to hand over their face or ID just to keep chatting on Discord. The company says the vast majority of accounts will never need to verify their age, and it has delayed the wider rollout to later in 2026. A check may still come up for age-restricted servers or certain settings. The privacy worry isn't silly, though. A third-party provider had a breach last year that exposed some users' ID photos. So if your teen is ever prompted to verify, ask them to pause and show you first. Be wary of messages, pop-ups or accounts outside the app that claim you must verify, since scammers can borrow a real panic.

How to join in

This was a rumour that spread fast in gaming circles after Discord announced new age checks in February 2026. Many users thought everyone would have to scan their face or upload an ID, and some threatened to quit or cancel paid plans. Your teen may have seen it in a server or on social media, or may have friends who are annoyed about it. It's a good opening to ask what they heard, how they decide whether a viral claim is true, and what they think about sharing personal information with apps.

Try saying

“I heard people saying Discord was going to make everyone scan their face. Did you see that? Apparently it's not true for most people, but if the app ever asks you for your ID or a selfie, come show me first so we can look at it together.”
