A note for families: Criminal recruitment of teens for extortion
What it is
Montreal-area police say criminal groups recruit teens online to carry out threats, arson and vandalism against shopkeepers, which puts teens at risk of danger and criminal charges even though most never meet the people behind it.
How much it matters
Real but nuanced. Usually fine; it depends on the kid and how they use it.
Should you worry?
Police in the Greater Montreal area say organized groups demand money from shopkeepers and look for teens online to do the intimidating for them, so the adults avoid the risk. Teens have been arrested and some have been convicted. Possible warning signs: sudden money or new things with no clear source, secretive messaging, being offered easy cash for a quick job, new contacts who push the conversation to private apps, or being away at odd hours. If you notice any of this, stay calm and keep the door open: teens drawn in this way often feel trapped or scared. Tell your teen that stepping back is always possible, and that you will help them do it safely. If a crime may be underway or anyone is in danger, call 911.
What to say
“I read that some people online offer teens quick money to do things for them, and the teens end up in real trouble. If anyone ever offers you something like that, or pushes you to keep a secret, you can tell me and you won't be in trouble with me. I'd always rather help you get out of it.”
If you’re worried
If your teen is in danger or a crime is happening, call 911. If your teen has been approached or feels trapped, contact your local police and consider talking to a lawyer. Kids Help Phone (1-800-668-6868, or text 686868) is there for teens who need to talk. If your teen says anything about harming themselves, call or text 988.
