A note for families: Criminal recruitment of minors online

What it is

Quebec police report that criminal groups are approaching teens through social media and online games to get them involved in violent crime, which puts those teens at risk of harm and of arrest.

How much it matters

Real but nuanced. Usually fine; it depends on the kid and how they use it.

Should you worry?

Police say some criminal groups look for teens online and use them in violent disputes. This is not happening everywhere, but police see it rising. Typical patterns are a friendly new contact who offers easy money, status or a sense of belonging, then pushes the conversation to private chats and asks for secrecy. Warning signs include new cash or gear with no clear source, a new circle of older friends you have not met, secretive messaging, and sudden fear or withdrawal. Stay curious rather than angry, keep the conversation open, and tell your teen that anyone asking for secrecy or favours is a red flag. If you suspect involvement, contact your local police or a school resource officer, and call 911 if someone is in immediate danger.

What to say

“I've read that some people online try to get teens to do things for them, with money or friendship as bait. You wouldn't be in trouble if someone approached you, and I'd want to hear about it. If anyone ever asks you to keep a secret or do a favour, can you promise to tell me?”
