Should you worry?

The lawsuits allege that some teens formed intense emotional bonds with AI chatbot characters and that this contributed to serious harm. Most teens who try these apps are not in danger, but a chatbot that is always available, always agreeable and never tired can become a substitute for real support. Signs worth noticing: a teen who hides how much they use it, pulls away from friends or family, talks about a character as if it were a real relationship, or seems more withdrawn, hopeless or distressed. If you see that, stay calm and curious rather than confiscating the device right away. Ask what the chatbot gives them, check the app's age and safety settings together, and agree on limits. If your teen seems low or talks about hurting themselves, treat it as a mental health concern first and a screen issue second.
