A note for families: Cat in the Hat school threat hoax
What it is
Creepy, often AI-made posts of the Cat in the Hat naming schools have spread across the US and police keep finding no credible threat, but teens who post or add threats are being arrested and charged, so the real risk is to kids who join in.
How much it matters
Real, documented harm. A person checked this card before it was published.
Should you worry?
The threat itself has repeatedly been judged a hoax, but the consequences for kids are real: in several US states, teens who posted a version naming a school or added threatening wording were arrested or charged, and schools stepped up security or closed for the day. Posts that name a real school or student, or copy the trend for their own school, can bring school discipline and criminal charges even as a joke. It started in the US, but copycat posts can cross the border. Ask your teen what they have seen in their feeds, remind them not to repost, share or imitate these posts, and tell them to show you or a teacher instead. If a post names your child's school, report it to the platform, the school and your local police rather than forwarding it.
What to say
“I saw people talking about those creepy Cat in the Hat posts. Have you seen them? Police keep saying they're fake, but kids have still been charged for posting them, even as a joke, so if you see one, don't share it. Just show me or a teacher, and I'll help you report it.”
If you’re worried
If a post names your child's school or a specific person and you feel there is immediate danger, call 911. Otherwise report it to your local police, the school and the platform, and do not forward it. If your teen has posted or shared one, stay calm, have them delete it, and contact the school; if police are involved, consider getting legal advice. If your child is anxious or scared after seeing these posts, Kids Help Phone is there at 1-800-668-6868 or by text at 686868. For anything touching self-harm or suicide, call or text 988.
