A note for families: Brainrot
What it is
Brainrot is kids' slang for absurd, repetitive, endlessly scrollable online content, and also for the foggy feeling of watching too much of it; it's mostly a harmless in-joke, with the main concern being how much time it takes.
How much it matters
Harmless. A way into your kid’s world, and something to enjoy together.
Should you worry?
There is no specific danger here. The concern is the same as with any endless feed: it can crowd out sleep, homework and offline time, and kids can feel flat or scattered afterwards. Watch for a child who seems unable to stop scrolling, is irritable when the device is taken away, or has lost interest in other things. If you see that, talk about how the feed makes them feel, and agree together on screen-free moments, such as at meals and before bed.
What to say
“I keep hearing the word brainrot. Can you show me one that makes you laugh? And if you ever notice your head feels fuzzy after a long scroll, tell me, and we can figure out a break together.”
