A note for families: Blackout challenge
What it is
A parent in the US reports middle schoolers filming themselves in a choking game meant to make them pass out, a long-running trend that police and health agencies link to deaths, though this is a single local report.
How much it matters
Real but nuanced. Usually fine; it depends on the kid and how they use it.
Should you worry?
This is a choking game where kids chase a brief blackout or a rush, and it can cause brain injury or death, even on a first try and even when friends are watching. Possible warning signs include red or bruised marks on the neck, bloodshot eyes, frequent headaches, dizziness or confusion after time alone, and kids mentioning a "choking game" or "blackout". Stay calm and ask directly. Explain that passing out is the body in danger, not a harmless thrill. If you find videos, talk with your child before reacting with punishment, and consider letting the school know so other parents can be warned.
What to say
“I heard some kids your age are filming a game where they try to pass out, and I wanted to talk about it, not to blame you. It can really hurt someone, even the first time. If a friend ever pushes you, you can always blame me and say my parents would freak out, and you can tell me anything without getting in trouble.”
If you’re worried
